What to do in Tortola? Fear not, our list and recommendations of things to do in Tortola will leave you wishing you could stay longer in the British Virgin Islands. If you have done your research you will know that Tortola is the largest of the 60 islands that make up the British Virgin Islands. However, just a few of these islands are inhabited and if you are in the BVI for at least week plan on seeing them all. If you haven’t booked your Tortola accommodations please take a look at our privately held Tortola vacation rental. We have the welcome mat out for you.

What to do in Tortola?

Remember we said we would maximize your time and ensure your enjoyment so this recommendation will do both. How does killing 2 birds with one stone grabs you. Head over to Tortola’s north coast to enjoy one of the best beaches on the island Cane Garden Bay beach and while you are there be sure to visit The Callwood Rum Distillery. The rum distillery still produces rum just as it did over two centuries ago.

No visit to Tortola is complete without visiting Road Town the capital of Tortola. While in Road Town be sure to visit the following places as they are all in close proximity of each other. How is that for saving you time? This is where you can feel and experience the culture of Tortola.

Main Street: A narrow road with its West Indian charm of colorful wooden and stone buildings leads you to the 19th century Post Office, The VI Folk Museum which houses Plantation Era and RMS Rhone artifacts.

J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens: A beautiful 4-acre garden with a lush array of indigenous and exotic tropical plants.

Old Government House Museum: A very stately colonial building constructed in 1924 was the Governor’s residence. It is also home to a very comprehensive B.V.I stamp collection.

Are you a nature buff? Well one of the many things to do in Tortola is to visit Sage Mountain National Park. This is the highest point on the islands and while it can’t be considered a true rain forest it is lush and has the characteristics of one.

The things to do in Tortola would not be complete without a visit to The Baths on Virgin Gorda. You can plan on spending your day there. It is quiet and a popular day sail destination. The Baths were formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago and is the only formation of its kind anywhere in the Caribbean. Bring your swimsuit to explore the many caves, pools and grottoes that is characteristic of The Baths.

P.S. Plan your trip to The Baths on a day when there are no cruise ships in port.

The British Virgin Islands, a territory of Britain is a compact and mountainous archipelago of 59 square miles which is comprised of a mixture of 60 islands, islet and cays, many of which are uninhabited. Referred to as “Natures Little Secret” be warned, these islands offer more than they typical vacation offerings of crowded souvenir shops and never ending nightlife. In fact the British Virgin Islands offers some of the best beaches, snorkeling, sailing and diving in the Caribbean.

There are four main islands in this group the largest being Tortola. It is said that famous pirates such as Blackbeard and Captain Kidd have traveled here before the onset of the sugar industry. Today, Tortola is the center of The British Virgin Islands commerce and government.

Tortola has a population of around 21,000 and boasts lush green mountains as well as velvety white sand beaches such as Cane Garden Bay, Long Bay, Brewers Bay along its northern shoreline. Its highest point at an elevation of 1,710 feet is Sage Mountain. Sage Mountain features some dense tropical foliage dating back to when Columbus first discovered these islands. On the southern shore you will find the bustling municipality of Road Town. This is where you will find The British Virgin Islands government, many shops, restaurants, museums and several marinas.

Virgin Gorda is the second largest of The British Virgin Islands nicknamed “The Fat Virgin” by Christopher Columbus because of its shape. Home to the spectacular boulder formation known as The Baths, Virgin Gorda has clear blue beaches and many upscale hotels and resort. A tour of Virgin Gorda should include the old Copper Mine. The North Sound attracts boaters to its sheltered waters.

Northeast of Tortola is Anegada. The third largest of the islands that make up The British Virgin Islands Anegada is the least populated. In fact its resident Iguanas and Roseate Flamingoes outnumber the people that live on this island. Flat and very low laying it is often referred to as drowned island. It was formed from coral and limestone and has an extensive barrier reef formation called Horseshoe Reef. This makes The British Virgin Islands home to the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean and the fourth largest in the world. Ringed by white sand and its remote location make it a Mecca for beach lovers.

Finally, Jost Van Dyke the smallest of the four main islands in The British Virgin Islands is sparsely populated. It is home to some spectacular beaches dotted with great restaurants and bars. The most famous among them is Foxys’ Bar. It is a popular spot for day trippers and boaters.

The British Virgin Islands has quite an offering for vacationers looking for a unique vacation experience you won’t find anywhere else in the Caribbean. Isn’t it time you experience Natures Little Secret?
